Colonoscopy and upper endoscopy

Lower GI

Colonoscopy

A thin, flexible tube with a camera looks at the lining of your colon (large intestine). It is used for colorectal cancer screening and to look for the cause of bleeding, diarrhea or other changes. Dr. Pimienta can remove polyps and take small tissue samples (biopsies) during the same exam. Learn about colonoscopy.

Upper GI

Upper endoscopy (EGD)

A thin tube with a camera passes through your mouth to look at your esophagus, stomach and the first part of the small intestine. It helps explain heartburn, trouble swallowing, upper belly pain or bleeding, and biopsies can be taken. Learn about upper endoscopy.

Same day

Both together

If you need both exams, they can be done one after the other on the same day, with one round of sedation and one trip to the center.

Your plan depends on your health; Dr. Pimienta will talk with you about what fits you.

What procedure day is like

  1. Get ready at home

For a colonoscopy, you follow a special diet and drink a bowel prep the day before so your colon is clean. For an upper endoscopy, you stop eating and drinking for several hours. You get instructions ahead of time, and our preparation page walks through each step.

  2. Check in at the center

Bring your ID, your insurance or Medicare card and your list of medicines. A nurse checks your health and places an IV (a small tube in a vein) for the sedation medicine.

  3. The exam

You receive sedation so you are comfortable, and most people remember little or nothing. The exam itself usually takes less than an hour.

  4. Recovery and going home

You rest while the sedation wears off. Dr. Pimienta explains what he saw. If biopsies were taken, results come later. A responsible adult must take you home, and you should not drive for the rest of the day.

After a procedure, get help right away if you have severe belly pain, a fever, vomiting, or more than a small amount of bleeding from the rectum. Call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room if symptoms are severe.

Consultations at the Wilshire office

Most care starts with a conversation. Office visits are at 6333 Wilshire Blvd, Suite 200, in Los Angeles, about a mile east of Beverly Hills near the Miracle Mile. Dr. Pimienta sees adults for acid reflux, abdominal pain, bloating, bowel changes, fatty liver disease, colon polyps and more, and he offers medical weight management. Many follow-up visits can also be done by secure video if you are in California at the time of the visit.

See the Mid-Wilshire page for more about the office.

Getting around on Wilshire

The Metro D Line subway extension opened in May 2026 and now serves Wilshire Boulevard, with stations that include Wilshire/La Cienega and Wilshire/Fairfax. The Wilshire office is a few blocks west of the Wilshire/Fairfax station, so the train can be an easy way to get to an office visit. For a procedure, plan for a ride home with an adult instead, because you should not travel home alone after sedation. If you are driving to the office, ask our team about parking when you book.

Payment

  • Medicare is accepted, including patients with a secondary (supplemental) plan.
  • Medicare Advantage: call us before booking so we can check your plan.
  • Other insurance: the practice is out of network, so visits are self-pay. Our team explains pricing first and gives you a superbill to send to your insurance.
  • For procedures, the surgery center, anesthesia and pathology may bill separately. Our team explains what to expect before your procedure.
